The voting is closed. A look at the exit poll results.

The Ukrainian National election for their Parliament:

Comparison of tonight's exit poll results and the predictions on this blog one week ago.

Last week the professionals were giving the Prime Minister's party about 33% of the vote and Yula Tymoshenko's party about 20%

The blog's prediction was Yulia Tymoshenko would take enough votes from the Prime Minister's party to have a strong second place.

Exit polls say Prime Minister's party 35.2% and Yula Tymoshenko's party 31.5% Close enough so far. I was thinking about a 5 - 6% spread favor the Prime Minister.

The blog predicted that the President's party would take his party into a coalition with Tymoshenko's party. He did that about a day before the vote started. Remember, he had fired the lady when she was Prime Minister.

The blog boldly predicted that the communists would bomb and not gain the 3% minimum  vote to enter the Rada. The blog bombed with the exit polls showing 5.1% for the communists.

The blog predicted fraud. Nothing enlightened there. Yula Tymoshenko is already challenging the vote in various places.

So it's not over. The vote count has started even now in Ukraine and the issues of fraud will have to be settled.

We will post about this again when the official vote is in which might take several days.

One Week to Elections in Ukraine

Elections in Ukraine One Week Away

September 30, 2007, Ukrainians vote for a new Supreme Rada – the national parliament.

The experts say it’s too close to call, citing these possibilities:

The Prime Minister’s party might maintain a majority to control the institution.

Yula Tymoshenko, the star of the Orange Revolution, might come close enough to enter a controlling collation.

The President’s party will have to enter a coalition.

The communists may take at least 3% of the seats.

My prediction:

Yula Tymoshenko will take enough votes from the Prime Minister’s party to have a strong second place.

The President will take his party into coalition with Tymoshenko’s party and that will make her Prime Minister.

This will put Yula Tymoshenko in a strong position to challenge the President for that position in the 2009 election.

The communists will bomb and not gain enough votes to enter the Rada. Three percent of the votes are required to gain entrance.

Watch Yula Tymoshenko:

She is reaching out to the west with a strong public relations campaign.

Her recent visit to the United States was successful and well publicized.

She recently visited the “Iron Lady”, former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

She has a web site that can be read in English.

She is campaigning hard in eastern Ukraine, the stronghold of the Prime Minister and she will take votes from him.

A footnote: The outcome of this election is very important for Ukraine. There will be fraud. Order a copy of Conscience Calls from volunteer-author Roksolana Tymiak-Lonchyna. She and her husband were monitors for the 2004 election and her book is about that. The Lonchynas will be back once again for this one.

I will post again after the results are in. Let’s see what happens! David

Ignoring the Election

In case anyone is reading this blog and is not aware of what is happening in Ukrainian politics, Ukraine is getting ready for another parliamentary election this end of this month. And let me just state up front, that if you are looking for hard core political commentary on the latest news, then you would do better to read someone else’s blog. I have some great political blogs listed on my blogroll you can check out if you want the serious stuff. Consider my blog, the layman’s, foreigner, ex-pat, orf cliff note pop culture version of anything that might happen in this country over the next few weeks.

My first impulse regarding the election…..”

Forum, No-Borders dot eu

Forum, No-Borders dot eu

The following is an email to the members of this newly forming forum. Take a look, it’s an interesting place and easy to sign up. Look at the mission statement there to see if it fits with your agenda. The site is primarily designed for Europeans to exchange views and information about things European but they let me in under the “overseas” category. I’m about a week old there but already have had emails about a subject of interest to me. So – it might work for you!

www.no-borders.eu  is the site but you might want to read the email that the founders just sent, today! The address will be repeated at the bottom of the email.

Cheers, David  (USA  :-)

Dear member,

We would like to thank you for being one of the pioneers on this site!

We are very happy to announce that the basic features of the site are already up and running.

Nevertheless we feel the need to tell you more about this project!

About the philosophy of the site, take a look at the forum, which has already become active and members have submitted some posts.

Some posts on the forum are very informative.

For more information about what we have in mind, you can read the "Why be a member", "Mission" and "Volunteer" pages accessible either from the main page, or from the No-Borders menu visible almost on every page inside the site.

We asked for memberships before even launching the site to be able to trace deficiencies. Many of them have been traced and we work on making the site even better!

We haven’t yet uploaded the founders page as advertising ourselves is not a priority :), but it will be done shortly...

We dream of a site with no power/political hierarchy... all members will be equal...

We dream of it as a pan-European arena of political discussion though, and we would like to boost mutual understanding and knowledge among the people of
Europe.

Transparency and security are  main pillars of our development strategy. In no case this site is supposed to be used as a dating site. As problems have occurred from this very early stage we are working even harder to develop a security policy to avoid unhappy situations.

Please login on the site, update your profile and in case your photo doesn't show correctly, try to upload a smaller one. A full and knit profile will be more popular, more communicative and it will make our site even more attractive. Also feel free to invite your friends if you think they would be interested in this site. An "Invite your friends" page will also be up soon...

Finally, browse through the menus and try all the options. Although some are still inactive most of them do work! Search for members (Community menu -> Find Profile) and contact them by internal message (by clicking on the "Send me an e/n-b message" link on their profile)! Post your thoughts on the forum... Participate!

Welcome people of Europe No-Borders.

Best regards from Greece,

Paris Tsachouridis

Laws of Live

Dana Shumanska age 16

January 2004

Life – is a gift from God, which is given to people only once. It always has the beginning and has the end. Some people say that it’s like dream, but we are sure that this is a great chance for everyone to do his mission in the world and to show himself. To my mind everyone understands life in different ways. And we can not condemn them.

Life is a very private thing, because everyone has his inner world and lives in it too. I think that only a man must be the master of his life. But this gift as far as I’ve mentioned is from God and any time God can take this present back from us. So we must live due to some principles, due to some rules.

I think these laws have already been set by God and are called Ten Commandments, They are based on the faith in God, but contain also laws concerning relations between people: do not kill, do no steal, respect your parents and so on. And after realizing all these laws we understand that we have some restrictions and after death we will be punished for violating them.

Some religions say that there is one more rule; our children will be punished for our sins. People should be responsible for their actions. They should not think only about themselves, some people are very egoistic. This way God makes people think about future generations.

I think we should value the life, value the great chances, given by destiny. We should be decent, through maybe our destiny depends on our ancestor’s actions. I’m sure that people should be respectable, helpful, thankful to everyone who helps them and of course kind and generous. If everyone were kind our world would become a very pleasant place to live.

                                                                                                Dana Shumanska

                                                                                                16 years old

This essay was published on the web in 2003 as part of a collection by Ukrainian high school (gymnasium) students. Most were in Ukrainian but several noteworthy examples were in English under the sponsorship of Stryi Gymnasium English teacher, Halina Stetsko, an internationally recognized teacher of English as a second language.

I well remember grappling with Dana’s difficult subject at the same age but did not achieve her level of understanding. When reading her concluding sentence I exclaimed, “She’s got it! She nailed it!” (Bolding is mine.)

Just as “please” and “you are welcome” are stated in Ukrainian as bud’ laska, literally, “let there be kindness”, I propose that we attach “let there be friendship” and move forward in kindness and friendship with ukraineorphans.net
