A First for ukraineorphans, an Emergency Appeal.

November 1 & 2, 2007 there are important updates on the Home page.

An SOS from Albert Pavlov

This is in response to friend Albert Pavlov who has issued an appeal for the young man and his mother you see above. I could not ignore Albert's words. Please go to the Home page of ukraineorphans.net and read the article in full by clicking on the photo there.

This appeal sounds hopeless but I know it can be fulfilled. I'm glad that Dana Shumanska's words are running alongside this blog, just to the right.

Thanks, David

Women's race: Nobody can challenge Ukraine's Averkova

BY CHRIS SILVA

After winning Sunday's 30th
Detroit Free Press/Flagstar women's marathon, Ukrainian Anzhelika Averkova, 38, can cross a few things off her to-do list.

"She now can tell everybody, 'I've been to
Canada for a couple of minutes,' " Averkova said through an interpreter
.

USA an Enemy of Ukraine?

This Puzzles Me - The USA an Enemy of Ukraine?

This was sent by Google News Alert from Polskie Radio DLA Zagranicy.

"Poland is Ukaine's best friend. 48% of the respondents to a poll staged in Ukraine are convinced that Poland and Ukraine are linked with very friendly ties. Still 45% of the respondents consider Russia as the best neighbor, at the same time Moscow is also mentioned as the worst enemy of Ukraine, as are the USA, Germany, Belarus and Iraq."

The feelings about Poland and Russia I understand. The feelings about Germany might be WWII still playing? Belarus I have no clue except that it's rulled by a dictator, maybe that has something to do with it.

The USA? We haven't ever threatened, attacked or occupied the country as far as I know. A lot of  private aid and assistance flow into Ukraine from the US. I am puzzled about this one.

Iraq? How did they become an enemy of Ukraine?

If there is anyone in reach of ukraineorphans.net who understands this please send me an email .

Thanks, David

Ivan Mazepa

Is this the Ukrainian Hero I know as Ivan Mazepa? Know as a vile traitor in Russian History? Is this true? This is a real change if so.

Mazepa the Cossack who tried one last time in 1708 to free Ukraine from the Tsar. He failed and Ukraine remained under Russian domination until December 1, 1991.

Kyiv Council To Rename Sichnevoho Povstannia Street Into Mazepy Street (10:02, Wednesday, October 17, 2007)

Ukrainian News Agency

Kyiv city council has intention to rename Sichnevoho Povstannia street, Pecherskyi district, into Ivana Mazepy Street.

Ukrainian News learned this from the Kyiv council press service.

Kyiv council presidium backs decision on the renaming.

As Ukrainian News reported, September the commission for street renaming, installation of memorial signs and plaques of the Kyiv city state administration initiated renaming 131 streets with Soviet names.

The commission compiled a preliminary list of 131 streets, which names remind of totalitarian regime in Ukraine's history, i.e. of the Soviet Union.

A Glimmer of Hope

Monday, October 15, 2007

“A Glimmer Of Hope In The Rubble”

“KIEV, Ukraine -- On Saturday morning, a gas explosion rocked a block of flats in eastern Dnipropetrovsk Region, claiming at least 13 lives as of Sunday evening. Many more were injured or left homeless, while rescuers continue to search the rubble for survivors.”

Here in ukraineorphans.net we certainly are not celebrating the loss of life and property in the recent apartment gas explosion in Ukraine. We have followed reports of the aftermath. This is from one of our favorite Ukraine news and analysis sources. Blog.kievukraine.info talks about a possible governmental change in response to such events.  Interesting article, please click on the link.

Upsetting News

"Every fourth Ukrainian does not like living in Ukraine"

"Only some 47.1% of Ukrainian citizens like living in Ukraine. These are the results of an all-Ukrainian poll withing frameworks of annual research program "Mental Bases of Election", carried out by Kyiv Institute of Management Problems named after Gorshenin and publicized at a press conference in UNIAN today."

This is somewhat upsetting for a friend of Ukraine. Please open this link to read the short article and stats.

Final Vote Results Reported

Ukraine Reports Final Votes for Parliamentary Election

This sees to be it unless the charges and counter charges overturn these results:

Party of Regions............................................................34.37%
BYuT.................................................................................30.71%
Our Ukraine - People's Self Defense........................14.15%
Communists......................................................................5.39%
Lytvyn Block.....................................................................3.96%

A coalition between BYut (Yulia) and Our Ukraine - People's Self Defense will allow the western looking parties a very thin majority over the Party of Regions which is reported to look east.

The President (OU-PSD) is reported to be making statements that seem to make his intentions and desires about possible coalitions unclear.

The election - votes 99+% counted

Election Update

Today,
October 3, 2007 it is reported that 1902 polling stations have not reported vote counts. By law they have until October 14 to report. The stations are in Kyiv, the capitol city of about 2.7 million people and Stevastopol in the Crimea, with a population of over 340,000.

On this date the reported counts are:

Party of Regions – the Prime Minister’s party…. 34.31%

BYuT – Yulia’s party……………………………… 30.76%

Our Ukraine-People’s Self Defense party……… 14.17%

Communists………………………………………    5.38%

Lytvyn Block……………………………………...… 3.76%

All of these parties will have seats in the Parliament (Rada).

The Socialists have 2.86%, not enough to pass the 3% hurdle to gain entrance to the Parliament.

There are charges that the late counts are being manipulated to push the Socialists over the 3% threshold. With the Communists, the Lytvyn Block, and the
Socialists forming a coalition with the Party of the Regions the East will continue to control parliament.

The issue is undecided. There will be serious charges and counter charges of fraud and there will be investigations.

We will wait until all polling places report for further comment unless it is reported that the Socialists have gained the necessary 3%.

Laws of Live

Dana Shumanska age 16

January 2004

Life – is a gift from God, which is given to people only once. It always has the beginning and has the end. Some people say that it’s like dream, but we are sure that this is a great chance for everyone to do his mission in the world and to show himself. To my mind everyone understands life in different ways. And we can not condemn them.

Life is a very private thing, because everyone has his inner world and lives in it too. I think that only a man must be the master of his life. But this gift as far as I’ve mentioned is from God and any time God can take this present back from us. So we must live due to some principles, due to some rules.

I think these laws have already been set by God and are called Ten Commandments, They are based on the faith in God, but contain also laws concerning relations between people: do not kill, do no steal, respect your parents and so on. And after realizing all these laws we understand that we have some restrictions and after death we will be punished for violating them.

Some religions say that there is one more rule; our children will be punished for our sins. People should be responsible for their actions. They should not think only about themselves, some people are very egoistic. This way God makes people think about future generations.

I think we should value the life, value the great chances, given by destiny. We should be decent, through maybe our destiny depends on our ancestor’s actions. I’m sure that people should be respectable, helpful, thankful to everyone who helps them and of course kind and generous. If everyone were kind our world would become a very pleasant place to live.

                                                                                                Dana Shumanska

                                                                                                16 years old

This essay was published on the web in 2003 as part of a collection by Ukrainian high school (gymnasium) students. Most were in Ukrainian but several noteworthy examples were in English under the sponsorship of Stryi Gymnasium English teacher, Halina Stetsko, an internationally recognized teacher of English as a second language.

I well remember grappling with Dana’s difficult subject at the same age but did not achieve her level of understanding. When reading her concluding sentence I exclaimed, “She’s got it! She nailed it!” (Bolding is mine.)

Just as “please” and “you are welcome” are stated in Ukrainian as bud’ laska, literally, “let there be kindness”, I propose that we attach “let there be friendship” and move forward in kindness and friendship with ukraineorphans.net
