Read All about It! Kyiv is voted in!
Kyiv scores! Is it fate?
Or did the world know and merely vote in advance? Perhaps you remember a few months ago the Monopoly board game played and loved by
millions during and since the depression years of the 1930’s was to have a face lift – an international edition
face lift. The old street names from Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA would be replaced by cities from around the world – cities chosen by international vote. For several months every
email address in the world was allowed to vote once a day for up to three of the cities in play. There were many beautiful
and famous cities such as Kyiv in Ukraine, Moscow in Russia and many others in running for the twenty two open spots. It must have been a
prediction cast by the world. The final results were just revealed. Kyiv is in! Riga, Latvia, is in! Gdynia, Poland is in! Moscow is no where to be seen. When the results were
blocked from view during the final ten days of voting Moscow was down about twenty places out of the running. Imagine, Riga in tiny Latvia is in far ahead of Moscow. Is this amazing or not. I think not, but you decide. .

Good news out of Disaster
It
is good! It is very good to read good news out of tragedy. We
read with sadness about the floods in Western Ukraine. We wish there could be a strong Orthodox Church in Ukraine not associated with or protected
by any government but devoted to faith and truly helping the orphans and others in serious need. We wish the question
of the Russian Fleet can be resolved with respect for both nations. We wish for much. We read also good things
and are grateful for the good news. 2008-08-07 17:08:00 Viktor Yushchenko transfers month's worth of his wage for flood mitigation.
Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko has transferred a month's worth of his wage for August 2008
to eliminate the consequences of the devastating floods in western Ukraine. nrcu.gov.ua [07.08.2008 10:11] Five house projects approved for building in
western Ukraine The Government has approved 5 typical house projects for building for the citizens suffered from the flood. Prime Minister

Emergencies Ministry arrived in the Ukrainian town of Ivano-Frankivsk last night. "The convoy carrying

HIV in Ukraine
Your
custodian of ukraineorphans.net will be focusing more and more on the older Ukrainian Orphans and they needs and challenges.
After being feed and housed for their entire lives these children must face life on the outside. Institutions do not
prepare people for independent and productive lives. That is true in the United States, Ukraine, or anywhere one looks. The problem of HIV and
AIDS in Ukraine is serious and becoming more so. It certainly affects the young who have been sheltered from society and must suddenly
live in it. This article from iStockAnalyst describes the developing crisis in Ukraine. “Ukraine
Risks Being Europe's Leader for Rate of HIV Spread – Official” “By: iStockAnalyst Friday, August 01, 2008 8:10 PM” “ ‘Ukraine risks becoming the number one
country in Europe in terms of the rate of spreading the HIV-infection,’ Stavniichuk said.” That is a strong statement.

Posted by Stryi Gymnasium, Ukraine Laws of Live
Dana Shumanska
age 16 January 2004
Life – is a gift from God, which is given to people only once. It always has the beginning and has
the end. Some people say that it’s like dream, but we are sure that this is a great chance for everyone to do his mission
in the world and to show himself. To my mind everyone understands life in different ways. And we can not condemn them.
Life
is a very private thing, because everyone has his inner world and lives in it too. I think that only a man must be the master
of his life. But this gift as far as I’ve mentioned is from God and any time God can take this present back from us.
So we must live due to some principles, due to some rules.
I think these laws have already been set
by God and are called Ten Commandments, They are based on the faith in God, but contain also laws concerning relations between
people: do not kill, do no steal, respect your parents and so on. And after realizing all these laws we understand that we
have some restrictions and after death we will be punished for violating them.
Some religions say
that there is one more rule; our children will be punished for our sins. People should be responsible for their actions. They
should not think only about themselves, some people are very egoistic. This way God makes people think about future generations.
I think we should value the life, value the great chances, given by destiny. We should be decent,
through maybe our destiny depends on our ancestor’s actions. I’m sure that people should be respectable, helpful,
thankful to everyone who helps them and of course kind and generous. If everyone were kind our world would become
a very pleasant place to live.
Dana Shumanska
16 years old
This essay was published on the web in 2003 as part of a collection by Ukrainian high school (gymnasium)
students. Most were in Ukrainian but several noteworthy examples were in English under the sponsorship of Stryi Gymnasium
English teacher, Halina Stetsko, an internationally recognized teacher of English as a second language.
I
well remember grappling with Dana’s difficult subject at the same age but did not achieve her level of understanding.
When reading her concluding sentence I exclaimed, “She’s got it! She nailed it!” (Bolding is mine.)
Just
as “please” and “you are welcome” are stated in Ukrainian as bud’ laska, literally, “let
there be kindness”, I propose that we attach “let there be friendship” and move forward in kindness and
friendship with ukraineorphans.net
