Is the Starfish story by Loren Eiseley true? – in many ways yes. One day as I
was surfing the web, months before this humble website was even dreamed of, I looked up from the computer screen.
.
In
the distance I saw the beautiful beaches of North Carolina. Far down Kitty Hawk there was a small figure twirling around as in a dance.
.
Coming
closer I saw the figure was older, much like me, but one who had retained the beauty and energy of youth. She was picking
up starfish stranded by the storm and throwing them back into the surf.
.
Strange
I thought, I have seen thousands of stranded starfish and just walked on. I asked her, “What are you doing?” She
said, “I’m throwing stranded starfish back into the surf, the tide is going out and they will die on the beach”.
.
“Why? Can’t you see there are thousands of stranded starfish
– you can’t possibly make a difference.” As she threw another back into the Atlantic she said, “I made a difference
to that one.”
.
Months later her message had eaten its way into my heart and ukraineorphans.net
was started, with one lonely page hidden deep in the web. She was the inspiration – I’ll call her Anne which is
a nice sounding name.
.
As my searches continued I realized that she has many
names; Anne, Roksolana, Oksana, Inna, Irina, Sonia, Steve and Olha, Albert, Sergey, Alice, Lisa, and many more.
.
You
can find many of them here. There are not enough. Please consider joining forces with one of them, maybe the two of you can
help save one orphan.
.
All the best,
David.
